I am busy refurbishing the difflock cylinders of the old bakkie 300GD - they are not so good inside any more. I think MB probably will charge a lot for new if available. I know that some brake specialist places will ream them and install new stainless sleeves and provide the necessary rubber seals to suit. I know there are people in Durban but i do not know their reputation other than a master cylinder on my 280 which they did - i think they only polished it but it did not work for long.

Asking Google ended me up with Wingate Motors in Germiston i think - now i remember them from long ago in my Vereeniging days as a known garage with good reputation - they are advertising to be able to refurbish most old cylinders. I contacted them and they were very helpfull even after most of the their workshops were destroyed in the unrest - they are very keen for the work and believe they will be up and running in a few weeks again

Does anyone here have experience
1, with this re-sleeving work on cylinders
2. Experience with Wingate motors?

Any other brilliant plans to refurb these cylinders?

Wingate still exists here in Johannesburg. They are at 25 City & Suburban Road, Johannesburg. Tel 076 385 9668. No idea about damages, but yes there are a few hostels close-by and they may have issues from the latest nonsense.
I have not had re-sleeving done with them for some time.
Lately (in the last two years!) I have used Safety Brake & Clutch at 15 Terrace Road, Edleen (Edenvale). Tel 011 452 2736 Ask for Frans Coleman or Steven. They have always given me excellent service.

Norbrake in Boksburg does good work. The rebuilt the master cylinder on my 1982 300GD; no issues since then.

Hi Freek,

I’ve also used Safety Brake before for a refurbishment and was very happy. The Mog guys all use them.

You can also order new cylinders from LMB seals in Strydom Park. They will have the parts and are a fraction of the cost from Merc.
