Interesting thing happened Alan. The crawler box and the overspeed box are externally identical and both 711.11x. So i fitted all the selector rods and levers exactly the same and ended up with this shift pattern on the crawler box:
R25
134
The overdrive box is:
R24
135
Simple enough to change but i left it like that. Keeps me alert.
So enduro says it needs bearings, some machining to repair worn splines and all five syncros. I see syncros on e bay for €100 plus each. Or shall i say €100 plus ouch.
I asked the dealers to quote.
Alan, do you have Guido's contact details pse. I messaged him last week via CGW with no response.
Sorry Andrew, no, haven't had contact with him for ages. I will have a look in my old mails maybe something turns up.
Only found his ebay@industrytools.de email.
In the meantime on thursday the bakkie started rolling around on the road. Snapped a shock in half. Didnt / havent hit anything hard at all so am confused at what caused it. I need to check the alignment of the top and bottom mounts before i fit replacements.
So indeed - the shock mounts were misaligned (I swear it wasn't me!!). Got it fixed and replaced the shocks with the Bilsteins that belong to my cabrio*.
Now some feedback on the gearbox: Enduro have repaired what they can and the parts which I ordered 26/02 from MBSA are still not here. I have offered to walk to Germany and fetch them for us. This whole escapade is going to be expensive but that gearbox is the right thing in this car so it will have to wait.
The gearbox parts finally arrived i now have a very smooth 5 speed “iron box”. No grating even with snappy gear changes so all good. I join the the ranks of those endorsing Enduro Gearboxes. For the record the whole job cost about R20k and i replaced everything. The only bummer was how long MB took to get the parts.
