Well done, keep us posted.
People underestimate the work it takes to do a conversion.

So my old Hoenderhok / Chicken coupé got a little run this afternoon and although I would have rather avoided all the effort the "new" engine is definitely an improvement on the old.

The two engines have approx the same power and torque but my immediate observations:

The 662 is a lot smoother and quieter.
Starts very easily - hardly needs glowing. (I think I have been lucky with this one. It looked tacky on the outside when i bought it)
Is sooo much better at off-the-boil lugging - that is if you are in a higher gear at low revs and the turbo is not spinning, this engine is very much better at chugging along than the 617 turbo.
It is more responsive - the 617 used to spend a lot of time, after you pressed the accelerator pedal, thinking about whether to obey or not.
I must intercool.
Very slow crawling is the same.
It was quite acceptable at highway speeds before and i imagine it might even be better now.

The cherry on top? If i can get 800 k's on a tank of diesel.

I would like to still believe that the burden of proof lies with the accuser Alan. I tried to upload a video with no success. So hopefully these pictures will convince third parties that there is reason to doubt your doubts!

The rad picture is included to show you guys what the home made cowl's final engine height (fan height) is on my conversion. I believe it may be a little low. But it works!

I need to know what goes tik tik tik in this engine - just like a loose tappet - when its warmed up. Switch it off and on again and its gone. Any guesses?

It is not injector rattle and all the belt driven stuff is new

Hydraulic lifter? Most people replace it but sometimes there's residue which can be cleaned out and refitted. It could also be something else.

I think you might be correct Leonard. I have some more observations: When i tarted it this morning it tik-tikked and also misfired - first time its done that - and then was quiet. So i did about 150km with it - chased it up some hills to watch temps and all good except every now and then it tik-tiks.

So i might chuck in some liqui moly first and if that doesnt work do i have to replace? All? I was born when pushrods were on the outside of the engines!

To be honest I would leave it. If lifters are a problem, you would see that on your oil pressure. Maybe first connect a gauge to the original spot by the filter and then on the back of the head where there is a blank off nut. You could then see the difference. But...., first drive it and let it try clean itself, If it doesn't and the engine has a really high mileage and was not treated to regular oil services the lifters could be worn, but then you probably need a new head as the bores for the hydraulic lifters wear.

Maybe Pierre can chime in here since he has been through this.

The 711 gearbox with overdrive 5th is a bit rattly so I took it out and fitted my 711 with crawler in its place. Now I cant go so fast but, hot dang I can go slowly!

Danie - can I attach video on this site? There is this unbelieving oke called Alan.......??
