Some Notes & Suggestions

  • Water – There are a water supply at the camping site but being Africa there are no guarantees. We will be able to get water at the Lodge should be needed. Suggest all plan to have water for at least two days when entering Makuya
  • Ablution – one shower and one toilet. Again, no guarantee on condition. Suggest be prepared for bush camping
  • Electricity – Zero
  • Wood – We should be able to get additional wood from the lodge but suggest that each vehicle have one bag per night minimum. I have confirmed with Pafuri River Camp that they do have wood available.
  • Remember we are camping in Big5 area and campsite are unfenced.
  • Refuse – everything going in must come out. Remember point 5 and read Hyenas
  • Nearest Fuel – Odd 100km away. This is just after Tshipise. Suggest filling up here before going through to Pafuri River Camp
  • Most lunches will be on the road in the reserve and not at campsite.
  • Terrain will mostly be rocky with some sand when going down to the river.
  • I am not sure what overgrowth will be like on the roads, due to the fact that it was a great rainfall year there might be some overgrowth on the roads. Panga or something similar might be needed.

Thanks Chris. Just the sort of inspiration we need while sitting tight at home.

Looks like it was a nice big group. How was the Pafuri campsite?

Herewith the long awaited Report Back.

"At last' I could hear the members crying out.

As in the past, Makuya Nature Reserve once again did not fail to impress the G WagenClub members for it's Beauty and Tranquillity.
A lot of questions are being asked by a number of off road forums of late, if there are any safe Bush Camping still available in our country.
It goes without say this is one of the best if not the best.
From the response received in a very short while it was evident that this was going to be a FUN RUN of note - 29 people attended.
The guys from the Northwest Province travelled from Zeerust along the Botswana border towards Limpopo for two days mostly on dirt roads.
Some members took time of to visit the Kruger Park while others stopped over at a farm in Hoedspruit on their way.
It is quite a distance towards Makuya irrespective of your location unless you are from the Soutpansberge area which is still round about 200km.

We spent a relatively quiet Saturday night at Pafuri River Camp bordering the Kruger - (the fines committee will be interested in this one ).
Sunday morning we departed for Makuya Nature reserve where we settled in for our stay.
Luckily Deon and Annalene's Covid19 scare was short lived as their test results were negative and they joined us in the afternoon.
Cornel entertained us with his knowledge of the area as we visited most of the best scenic places -Rivers beds, mountain passes,
bush driving, a visit to Makuya Lodge, and a late afternoon 4x4 rocky route which left some of the guys exhausted doing their roadbuilding excises.
Hats off to Christi and his Prof, completing most the of trip in limp mode as well as assisted with towing someone to the campsite.
Unfortunately the Prof had to be loaded on a low bed in Hoedspruit as it was not able to drive at normal speed back home.

For those who could not make the trip, please do not despair, as this trip to Makuya has paved the way for more to come.

A BIG THANK YOU to Cornel who assisted with all the arrangements -
