The sound goes on and off erratically and looks as if it happens inside the amplifier. Any of you with same gripes and a possible repair or replace?

Hi Johan, not sure but on a G500 I worked on that did not have any sound there was a possibility that it was due to a optic cable from the radio to the amp in the back. Possibly this could be a loose connection or even dirty connection. I was unable to fix that as it would mean all the drawers and camping kit had to be removed first.

Johan, I had the same problem, after removing the amplifier (under the front passenger seat) I found that moisture got into it and created a short on one of the chips, cleaned it with switch cleaner and a soft tooth brush and put thermal paste back on the chips, it was fixed.

BTW the AMP is &%#@ing expensive.

The sound issue sorted itself out during the winter months after the last comms (above) to near perfect. Hence, no contact to JJ.
Lately all the issues are back, I seems it runs with the wet season we are now experiencing. No sound at all the last two weeks.

I does sound to me like the Amplifier PC board (under the passenger seat) that's the issue, maybe open it up, you'll probably find some "moldy growth" in the IC's

Removed the amp yesterday and dismantled everything. Flimsy IC that. The whole heavy housing acts as a heat sync...
No moisture visible anywhere and no fungy or any funny critters visible. Did give the whole system a good blowjob with a hairdryer on cold setting. Connected the IC without the housing and two little lights light up at the fan area. The fan did not startup, but I believe it will only start up when heat is excessive. Fan is not stuck, easy free wheeling
Symptoms
- Radio will not sound when pressing the round knob without ignition on
- Radio will not sound with ignition on
- Radio sound a few seconds after the engine starts but sound stop when engine stops. It should still sound until ignition key is removed.
- Then when trying again no sound at all.
- Everything on the screen is good as normal. Problem lies with sound only

Later it will sound again and die, but erratic. No real routine to assess...

Does this radio have an optical connector ? I've heard of issues with the optical cable going to the back where the CD changer sits giving issues on older models. Maybe try reseating the optical cable at the back? Just a thought.

There nobody in you area with a G350 that you can swap amps with to check if your amp is ok?

Also check the impedance (OHM's) on your speaker wires, maybe you have one shorting out causing the amp to go into "Safe Mode"

Regards,

The CD changer is part of the radio in front on the dash. There is no optical cable that I can think of or see. All copper and plenty of them. I have not started on the radio unit on the dash as all seems to be located at the amplifier area.

Tx JJ. That is a good idea.
Regarding the impedance... I have no idea how to do that. There are so many wires coming out of that multipin plug.

Had a similar issue in a Disco II in 2002-ish, and it councided with a stuck driver's door window. Stopping, switching the car off, then restarting it after 3 minutes, cured it. In IT terms, the Disco II required a reboot. Same brand sound system (which, in that car, didn't exactly lived up to expectations.)
