Anyone experienced a cracked sparewheel bracket? I recently did a trip to Limpopo covering some bad gravel roads. Along the way the sparewheel started making banging noises in rough sections of the road. Initially I tightened the wheel nuts, but it just kept on doing the same. I then removed the wheel to tighten the bracket, but on close inspection saw a crack running about halfway through the baseplate of the bracket between the top anchoring point and the bottom two. That plate is made with thick steel, probably 6 to 8mm, so I was surprised to see a crack of that size right through the steel. Luckily it was just two of us so I moved most of our luggage to the rear seat and carried the spare in the boot for the remainder of the trip. Will have it fixed and strengthened once the engineering places are open again.

That sounds weird but on the old steel wheel G's the outer face of the rim faced inwards ie towards the door which made the load point of the wheel on the bracket, very close to the door.

I am not sure of your G, but when alloy wheels first came out they mounted them "fair face" outwards which shifted the load point on the bracket outwards. Is yours like this?

Can you show us a picture?

You are right Andrew, mine is a 2014 with the outside of the wheel facing outwards. Not sure if it is standard, but my wheels are fitted with internal bead lockrings, which adds a lot of weight. Attached is a picture of the cracked plate. I have already removed it to get it fixed.

My car's spare wheel is facing outside to the door, hence the weight close to the bolts. The standard mounting bolts are also too short to fit otherwise.
I think the peculiar fitting of your spare is the culprit.
