Modern electronically injected diesels have far less waste heat than mechanically injected ones I believe. Adding an auto transmission to an older diesel and making it share the limited frontal area available for cooling was an issue. My 290 auto was a case in point - it always ran hot as opposed to my current 290 manual that has no heat issues at all.
Some of the guys placed a dedicated transmission cooler into the skid plate to get that heat out of the main radiator. Riaan and Freek know about this.
Earlier (above or elsewhere) JJ mentioned this cooler and I stated on my G it is used for engine oil. I apologize, JJ. It is indeed for the gearbox oil cooling. Dean confirmed it too. You were absolutely correct. On the later models as ours this cooler is OE. Being close to the skid plate one need to check regularly that any bend inwards of the plate can touch and chafe (spelling??) the cooler. Happened to mine and I had to have it welded. New at MB was R18k!
