Morning guys

My G is at Enduro for gearbox work and I have major faith in Dean (as was referred by you people earlier). We need a new radiator as the existing MAY BE suspect and Dean is worried that it may fail soon (as per his experience before on other G's).

Now the predicament
- No radiator available at MB locally
- No radiator available in Germany either. Needs to be manufactured and may take eight months.
- No possibility of a radiator made up locally.
- Not viable to bypass the radiator cooling function due to our hot climate.

Do any one know where to start looking further? Maybe USA? Or anywhere?

Do you have a part No.? or Vin No so one can check?
I take it you are referring to the transmission oil cooler only.

Not sure if this one is the correct one.
There are two but it depends on the Vin No.

Please send me your VIN. You can also send it via pm. That seems to be the normal radiator as also fitted in my 1992 300GD?

OK just checked not quite the same. One is A463 500 1200 other is 461 5000 102. They have slight differences.

Autobenparts looks quite shady.
- Very quick to show a picture of a radiator that is available in Europe
- Very quick to offer invoice or card payment receipt.
- Upon query if they have the unit in stock they reply

In the odd event that we receive an order that's incorrect or has a defect, our refund and exchange policy is very straightforward. For your added peace of mind, PayFast is a safe, private and reputable e-commerce portal we use to receive payments and allows you, our client to easily track us.

UNQUOTE
- They are based in Soweto
- Cannot confirm delivery date

Enduro is rebuilding the gearbox and I quote Dean's remarks freely
- Water is a certain killer for a gearbox. Even in minute quantities
- The G radiator where the oil and water is separated by a very thin plate is prone to collapse in time
- There is no local radiator builder that can be completely trusted. Even cleaning of the original is not always successful. Small particles may come loose that can damage the workings.
- My radiator is not yet there but he recommended replacing it with new in order to guarantee his work on the gearbox. He obviously worked through the complete system, ECU included.
- My gearbox failed due to hot running. (mentioned in other freds here)

I hope this puts your mind to rest... Or not...

Do you think it's a good idea to put an extra oil cooler (Oil/air) in the cooling line to help with the hot temps in SA, or maybe just get rid of the Oil/Water cooling in the engine radiator completely and replace it with an Oil/Air?

Maybe Dean can tell us why they don't do that.

I asked Dean about eliminating the radiator and install an additional in line, then saving PLENTY Randellas. His remark was quite logical as in our hot climate and with the vehicle stuck in traffic where there is no airflow to cool the oil will be devastating.
A separate radiator in front of the AC radiator? Maybe, me thinks. But he likes to stick to standard.

Personally, I do not think heat is really an issue on the Gs. My situation was due to human error...

Modern electronically injected diesels have far less waste heat than mechanically injected ones I believe. Adding an auto transmission to an older diesel and making it share the limited frontal area available for cooling was an issue. My 290 auto was a case in point - it always ran hot as opposed to my current 290 manual that has no heat issues at all.

Some of the guys placed a dedicated transmission cooler into the skid plate to get that heat out of the main radiator. Riaan and Freek know about this.
